CB Insights gathered data showing the 10 largest acquisitions which have been aimed at building and improving Apple’s success to date.

  1. Beats Electronics is considered to be Apple’s largest acquisition to date. This company acquired both Beats Music, the subscription streaming music service, and Beats Electronics, which makes headphones, speakers, and audio software for $3 billion in 2014.
  2. ?In 2018, Apple acquired Dialog Semiconductor for $600 million, making it the most recent acquisition on the company’s top 10 list. This way, Apple expanded its chip operations in Europe, taking on an engineering team that already had the experience of working on chips for Apple devices.
  3. Anobit Technologies, an Israel-based semiconductor startup, was acquired by Apple for $500 million in 2011. The reason for that is the flash memory components that are a key part of many of Apple’s products.
  4. Apple acquired Shazam for $400 million in 2017, claiming that the song identification app naturally fits with the Apple Music streaming service.
  5. The company also required NeXT Computer for the same price in 1996. The software development company is the earliest of Apple’s biggest acquisitions.
  6. Israelian 3D sensing company PrimeSense was acquired by Apple in 2013 for $360 million. It is now behind Apple’s facial recognition tech included in the iPhone X.
  7. Apple acquired AuthenTec, a Florida-based listed fingerprint sensors company, for $356 million in 2012. It was used to develop the company’s payment solution Apple Pay.
  8. In 2008, PA Semi was Apple’s first acquisition of a semiconductor company for $278 million. As to the reason for the acquisition, Apple was interested in low-power processors, especially for mobile devices.
  9. A mobile network operator Quattro Wireless was acquired by Apple for $275 million in 2010. Apple reveals that mobile advertising is one way for the company to further monetize its mobile platform.
  10. C3 Technologies, the Swedish startup, was acquired by Apple in 2011 for $273 million to boost its mapping feature.
