In 2020, e-commerce in the Netherlands amounted to €26,6 billion which is 7% more than in 2019 Ecommerce News has found. The rise in online shopping by Dutch consumers is directly linked to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Due to restrictions and fears of contracting the COVID-19, many Dutch customers have made much more online purchases online in the past year. Together, they made 335 million online purchases, up 27% from a year earlier.

The data are taken from Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor, an annual e-commerce survey conducted by the national e-commerce association Thuiswinkel.org. They cite several reasons why e-commerce has grown so much in the Netherlands. The main reason is that there were more purchases per 1online shopper: in 2019, there were 19 online purchases on average, and now there are 24. Moreover, the number of online shoppers increased by 2% to 13,8 million.

Online grocery spending grew 43% last year, while online grocery purchases increased 41%. These tangible purchases have managed to offset some of the impacts on intangible online orders. By the reason that online spending on services decreased 39% in the same year, online purchases of services decreased by 37%.

The notable growth in e-commerce in the Netherlands has also resulted in a significant increase in the use of iDeal. This payment method was used for 69% of all online purchases last year, up from 60% a year earlier.

In addition, iDeal was the most used method of paying for international purchases. Here, iDeal’s share is 46%. Therefore, it is still more popular than, for example, credit cards 22% and PayPal 16%.
